Meet our Earthling Founder

TD Clark

From a very young age, TD Clark knew he wanted to play music. When he was six, Clark had access to the piano at his grandparents’ house. In awe of his older cousin who was a piano prodigy, TD began to practice every day. Unfortunately, when his grandparents retired to Arizona, they took the piano with them. After that, TD was itching for a musical outlet.

One day, restless and bored, TD decided to dig through his mom’s closet. Near the back, he found an old guitar. As he started banging away on the guitar, his mom got annoyed. That’s when he knew he was on to something good!

In high school, TD kept playing guitar, and found himself playing in all sorts of projects, from an ad hoc talent show band to playing local youth spots and school events. For a while, TD took lessons from a local teacher who taught him how to learn songs by listening to albums. If he wasn’t hooked before, this was it.

Clark’s first serious band, Second Glance, is where TD learned to write and record music. Unfortunately, due to typical high school drama, the band broke up. Frustrated with that experience, Clark decided to record a solo album.

In between recording sessions, Clark severely crushed his hand in a work-related accident. While doctors tried to keep his hands still, TD was not convinced. He struggled through the recording sessions, laying down tracks while in excruciating pain. Luckily, doctors say this activity helped the healing process.

Clark’s solo album was finished in 1995, and he began sending copies to friends around the country and around the world. A friend in Japan connected Clark to music lawyer Steve Weiss, who represented major acts like Led Zeppelin and Bad Company. Weiss would go on to help Clark get connected to many important contacts in the music industry. Unfortunately, the rise of Grunge music in the 90s made record companies hesitant to invest in Rock and Shred artists.

While no record labels ultimately ended up signing Clark to their stable, he was able to go on tour in support of Ted Nugent, and other major acts all across the globe. In between touring, studio sessions, and home gigs, TD taught guitar lessons.

One frustration that Clark kept running into while teaching was the lack of quality curriculum designed for kids. The same lesson books from the 1950s were still being used (and still are). They were outdated and stale.

At the same time, Clark was raising two kids and seeing all the great curriculum they were exposed to at school. Soon, he began to develop the Mars Jamzz curriculum with colorful aliens from Mars who came to Earth to help kids learn to play guitar. At the same time, Clark started seeing the potential for running lesson programs at schools and park districts. Training teachers to use the Mars Jamzz curriculum and run the lesson programs in several states across the country, Clark started realize a new passion.

Today, Mars Jamzz guitar and keyboard lesson programs are running regularly in over 70 locations across the country. This is only the beginning!  We are committed to bringing the joy of music to kids and families in a fun and safe environment.
